The predictions about the 2022 midterm elections made by various Republicans have been made despite the fact that the election map for the midterms is objectively more favorable for Democrats. According to The Hill, 20 Republican seats are up for reelection during the 2022 midterms, as opposed to only 14 Democratic seats. During a news conference on the imprisonment of the January 6 Capitol riot defendants, House Representative Matt Gaetz revealed that he had spoken to former President Donald Trump about taking on a new role in Congress, per Business Insider. According to Gaetz, he spoke to Trump about making him speaker of the House of Representatives if the Republicans take back the majority in the House after the 2022 midterm elections. Currently, Nancy Pelosi is the Majority Speaker of the House of Representatives.
At a “Save America” rally in July, Gaetz also spoke of this same intention. “After the next election cycle when we take back the House of Representatives, when we send Nancy Pelosi back to the filth of San Francisco, my commitment to you is that my vote for speaker of the US House of Representatives will go to Donald J. Trump,” Gaetz said during the rally, as noted by WTXL. Despite the fact that the Speaker of the House of Representatives does not need to be an elected official, Jason Miller, a spokesperson for Trump, previously stated that the former president is not interested in becoming the speaker of the House of Representatives.

House Representative Matt Gaetz also echoed McConnell’s prediction — though his prediction proves to be a bit more extreme. Gaetz, who is still in the middle of an investigation into alleged sex trafficking, predicts that equally-controversial figures like Jim Jordan and Marjorie Taylor-Greene will be ruling the Senate after the 2022 midterm elections. “We are going to take power after this next election and when we do, it’s not going to be the days of Paul Ryan and Trey Gowdy and no real oversight and no real subpoenas,” Gaetz said during a news conference this week, per Yahoo! News. “It’s going to be the days of Jim Jordan and Marjorie Taylor Greene and Dr. [Paul] Gosar and myself doing everything.”
